It works. Silence arrives. But then doubt remains.

In my practice, this is one of the concerns that appears most often. Committed, present families who do the best they can in a world that has changed much faster than we have been taught to manage. And I want to say it clearly from the beginning: it’s not your fault. Raising children in the digital age is a new, complex, and emotionally demanding challenge.

This article stems from my clinical experience, but above all from science. Current research shows that screen use in childhood is prospectively associated with difficulties in behavioral and emotional regulation, especially when it interferes with the development of executive function, a key system for self-regulation of behavior and emotions (McHarg et al., 2020; Yang et al., 2022). Today we know that the relationship between screens, behavior, and emotional health is not simple or direct. The question is no longer just how much time, but how, for what, and in what emotional moment children use technology.

1. The “digital pacifier”: when calming does not mean teaching to regulate

Handing a screen to an upset child is understandable. We’ve all done it. But research shows us an uncomfortable reality: when we use screens as an external emotional regulator habitually, we are reducing key opportunities for emotional learning.

Studies on Parental Digital Emotional Regulation (PDER) show that frequent use of screens to calm children predicts, in the medium term, more expression of anger and less self-control, as well as a bidirectional relationship between child dysregulation and greater parental screen use (Radesky et al., 2022). From a neuropsychological point of view, this is especially relevant: executive function —inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, and working memory— develops through practice, especially in situations of sustained frustration with the emotional support of an adult. When the screen replaces this process, the brain does not train its own self-regulation mechanisms. It’s not about never using a screen, but about not turning it into the only response to discomfort.

2. Not all screens are the same (and this is key)

One of the ideas I try to convey most to families is this: it’s not the same to watch, play, create, or constantly compare oneself.

The research is clear:

social networks are the modality most associated with disruptive behaviors,

passive consumption and constant social comparison have an especially dysregulating impact,

effects vary depending on the content, the moment, and adult accompaniment.

Large-scale prospective studies, such as the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study, show that certain modalities of digital use —especially social networks— are associated with a higher prevalence of conduct disorders in school-age children (Nagata et al., 2023).

That’s why the important question is not just:

“How much time?”

but above all:

“For what, from what emotional place, and with whom?”

3. ADHD and technology: a vulnerability that must be understood, not judged

When I work with children and adolescents with ADHD, this relationship becomes even more evident. Their brain shows a greater search for immediate reward and a more fragile inhibitory control, which increases vulnerability to digital hyperstimulation.

Research shows that children with ADHD have a significantly higher risk of developing problematic internet use. This phenomenon does not respond to a lack of will, but to differences in neurodevelopment. Neuroimaging studies indicate alterations in response inhibition and self-regulation circuits associated with digital addiction (Ding et al., 2023).

When we understand it this way, we change our perspective: from the struggle for control to support and training.

4. When fewer conflicts does not mean more emotional health

Some studies suggest that intensive mobile use may coincide with fewer apparent family conflicts. From clinical practice, this opens an important reflection: silence is not always well-being.

When the screen regulates the family climate, it may be covering up:

unprocessed conflicts,

communication difficulties,

emotional avoidance.

Real calm does not come from the device, but from the bond that sustains emotional regulation.

5. It’s not a bad habit: it’s a brain under construction

A key idea to convey to families is this: the difficulty in disconnecting is not just behavioral, it’s neurological.

Neuroimaging research shows that problematic screen use is associated with lower activation of brain circuits responsible for inhibitory control and weaker functional connectivity between thought and impulse (Ding et al., 2023).

The child and adolescent brain is in full maturation process. The digital context influences how these pathways are built.

They don’t need punishment. They need structure, emotional training, and real regulatory alternatives.

6. Prohibiting does not educate: we must teach to live with technology

Absolute prohibition may reduce the symptom in the short term, but:

it does not teach self-regulation,

it does not prepare for autonomy,

it often generates a rebound effect.

Research and clinical practice point to another path: “digital emotional literacy“, that is, helping children to:

identify what they feel when they are online,

recognize which contents dysregulate them,

set limits from awareness, not just from the rule.

Simple questions like:

“How did you feel after seeing this?”

promote the development of executive function and emotional awareness.

7. The great forgotten protector: the “green time”

If I had to recommend a single intervention with clear evidence, it would be this: more nature.

Time outdoors is associated with a significant improvement in emotional regulation, a reduction in anxiety, and a decrease in behavioral problems, acting as a protective factor against digital overstimulation (Holton & Nigg, 2020).

It’s not just removing screens.

It’s offering experiences that regulate the nervous system naturally.

Digital Emotional Literacy: educating to feel, not just to control

At the Centre de Psicologia Jaume Primer – Psicòlegs Girona we work from this perspective, based on four pillars:

Digital empathy

Emotional reading of content

Management of digital stress

Mental health awareness

Because educating in the digital age is not about controlling time, but about accompanying the development of the emotional brain.

When should you seek help?

If you observe:

significant mood changes,

sleep problems,,

isolation,

school or relational deterioration,

Seeking help is not exaggerating.

It’s taking care.

Final reflection

Current research converges on a clear idea: the impact of screens on child behavior is not direct, but operates through processes of self-regulation and executive function in development (McHarg et al., 2020; Yang et al., 2022).

As a psychologist, but also as a professional who accompanies families every day, I deeply believe that we don’t need perfect parents, but present, curious, and emotionally available adults.

Technology will not disappear.

What we can do is teach our children to relate to it without losing themselves.

And that does not begin with a screen.

It begins with the
